A serious post this around.
I recently read in a news article that an IT guy was arrested by police under Section 292 of the IPC and Section 67 of the IT Act. As reported in the article, this guy started a orkut community called "I hate Sonia Gandhi" and posted some obscene derogatory remarks against her in that community. Here a congress worker saw the post, lodged a complaint against him and he was arrested. Here's the link to article.
Please don't get me wrong here, I totally respect Sonia Gandhi for the way she has been leading the congress party and her decisions at some of the critical points in her life exemplified by giving up the prime ministerial seat when it was hers for the taking. And I also strongly oppose the acts of writing obscene remarks about her (for that matter any human being) in public forums. However, at the same time, I strongly oppose the arrest of individuals who post such messages. Irrespective of the motives of these individuals, police action, or in other words moral policing, on these individuals is serious attack on the freedom of speech, which is one of the basic rights of people living in a so called democracy, of people in this country. Maximum punishment in this case should banning or deleting the account of that individual from orkut, but convicting him for an illegal crime is, in my opinion, an act of tyranny. As far as the implications of this act are concerned, I think all of us who would like to raise a voice against an issue or individual can become a victim of this moral policing. Even I can also be a target of this moral policing for writing this blog.
I do not understand what is Section 292 of the IPC and what is Section 67 of the IT Act. I also do not know what this guy had written in his now infamous post. I also do not know if he had any political motives for posting it. Even if he had political motives and his comments were disgracefully offensive, I still think he should have been given a warning and his posts should have been taken down from the forum, and then even after that if he was not prepared to listen, only then he should have been sued (mark my words here, "sued" NOT "criminally convicted").
Are these political parties are so insecure that they think these kind of comments can be demeaning/offending for individuals with as grand as stature as Sonia Gandhi? Do they really think that our society is so fragile that a few hundreds of comments like that will corrupt its innocent minds and shove it into an abysmal hellhole?
It is once more evident from this incidence that Indian political and judicial clout is still run by a bunch of immature, ignorant, and insecure sycophants who have too much free time to act on such nonchalant and insignificant things. If only these people had utilized this time to solve the problems which are closer to the heart of majority of population, they might had been more successful and more beloved across the nation.
